The early Years

Not all sedentary behaviour is harmful, it is in fact an important part of a child’s day. However, excess sitting time and screen time before age 5 can be harmful. It is linked with language delays, reduced attention and lower school readiness.

Sit Less
  • Less than 1 year: Should not be restrained for more than 1 hour at a time. Screen time is not recommended. When possible, it is encouraged to engage in various activities such as storytelling or playing with toys.

  • 1 - 2 years: Should not be restrained for more than 1 hour at a time or sit for an extended time. For children younger than 2 years, screen time is not recommended. For children aged 2 years, sedentary screen time should be no more than 1 hour. When possible while sitting, engaging in activities such as storytelling with a caregiver or playing with toys is encouraged.

  • 3 - 4 years: Should not be restrained for more than 1 hour at a time or sit for an extended period. Screen time should be no more than 1 hour. When possible while sitting, engaging in activities such as storytelling or playing with toys is encouraged.
