Kahnawà:ke statistics show fewer people being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes.
In January 2024, Onkwata’karitáhtshera released Our Community, Our Health Brief Data Update which includes diabetes in Kahnawà:ke statistics and information (Pages 23-29). For the full report, see KSCS link at the bottom of this page.
SUMMARY OF FINDINGS
INTRODUCTION TO STATISTICS TERMINOLOGY
i) INCIDENCE is the number of new people diagnosed with a disease each year.
ii) PREVALENCE is the total number of people living with disease at any one time.
INCIDENCE OF TYPE 2 DIABETES (PAGES 24-27)
In Kahnawà:ke, 40 people were newly diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in 2021-2022. This compares to 50 new people per year who were diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in 2000-2001. Dr Fuller, who coordinated the report states, “…the decrease in diabetes cases is likely due to the success of Kahnawà:ke’s many programs aimed at supporting people to prevent diabetes, and promoting physical activity and healthy eating habits.” This includes KSDPP!
Dr Fuller cautions that, “This decline may be attributed in part to improved access to care, and potentially to limitations in data collection since 2016. As a result, these findings may underestimate the actual prevalence of diabetes in the community. Overall, there is still a higher rate of diabetes being diagnosed in the community compared to the province”.
PREVALENCE OF TYPE 2 DIABETES (PAGE 28)
The total number of people living with Type 2 diabetes in Kahnawà:ke in 2021-2022 was 885, an increase from 460 people in 2000-2001. The prevalence of Type 2 diabetes is increasing because people are living longer after being diagnosed. Dr Fuller notes, “Diabetes prevalence remains more than two times higher in Kahnawà:ke compared to Montérégie and Quebec Province, with 19% of individuals in Kahnawà:ke affected compared to 9% in Montérégie and Quebec Province”.
