Helping to Prevent Type 2 Diabetes & Promoting Healthy Lifestyles since 1994
Kahnawà:ke Schools Diabetes Prevention Program, commonly known as KSDPP, has been a vital part of our community for three decades. In 1994, community elders requested that something be done to combat the rising rates of type 2 diabetes, sparking a movement rooted in culture, science, and community. KSDPP has built bridges since then, between researchers, educators, and Kahnawà:keró:non, to promote healthy living - vital to the prevention of type 2 diabetes, before it starts.
The work of the past 30 years culminated in a celebration at the first Indigenous Health Research Summit, held in September 2025, in Kahnawake.
Weaving together community-based participatory research, Kanien'kehá:ka values and modern health science, KSDPP has proudly contributed to Indigenous research ethics. Working with our Community Advisory Board (CAB), KSDPP created one of the first Indigenous community Code of Research Ethics which has been used or adapted by many other Indigenous organizations. Our work is not finished, and as we launch a new KSDPP chapter, the past, present and future are connected by a focus on wholistic wellness - physical, emotional, mental and spiritual health.
